Customer feedback

Hello Ulf,

I finally got a chance to try my 6wt bamboo 8’6 Mentor. I spent quite a bit of time admiring your work before casting. I am in love with it! The craftsmanship is impeccable. From the perfect silk ligatures to the gorgeous agate stripper.
Casting the rod was just as joyful as admiring it. I mounted a sinking line with a size 12 wooly bugger while prospecting for bass. Beautiful smooth action, with enough power to cast this bigger fly. I could not be happier with my purchase. Thank you very, very much.

Sincerely,

Hi Ulf-

Robert is a better wordsmith than I, but I fully endorse his comments.

And your rod is my favorite to "show-off" to friends and acquaintances.

Doug, Oregon

Hello, Ulf,

Speaking for myself (Doug can speak for himself, although I believe his opinion is the same), I really love the rod! We both fished our rods on a freestone stream in Montana in October, and the rods performed exceptionally well. We fished dry flies, and I was extremely impressed with the “intuitive” casting feel that the rod imparts. Almost like magic. Kudos to the maker (!),  and thanks so much for making them for us!

Best regards,

 Robert, Oregon

Ulf Löfdal, Legacy taper, 7 ft, 2pieces/2 tips, #5. Built 2020

Built by the very skilled rod builder Ulf Löfdal in Sweden. This stunning rod has straw-coloured hand splitted bamboo, built nodeless with allmost unvisuable splices and nice tapered bamboo ferrules. Cigar shaped cork handle with N/S winding checks. The reel seat and the posts on each side of the handle are ”genuine mammouth ivory”. It also features a flawless varnish and close to translucent tan silk wraps tipped bourgogne-red, bright Snakebrand rings with agate first and a small knurled hook keeper. Beautiful old viking inspired engravings on nickel/silver cap and sliding ring. Rod feels easy in the hand, has a well balanced dry fly action with an extra power reserve in the lower butt to throw a long narrow line if needed. It’s sensitive tip makes it nice for nymph fishing too. From the builders webpage ”www.bamboorods.se”:

”In my rods I try to gather all the experience and knowledge that generations of rod builders have found in their search for the optimal performance, both in materials and designs. During my 39 years as a rodmaker, I have reached the insight that a splitcane rod is so much more than just a nice piece of fishing equipment - It represents our fly fishing heritage, devotion to craftmanship, and the beauty of design. These values are shared by many splitcane rodmakers around the world and contributes to, that the passion for split bamboo will be carried on to future generations”.

Mentor 8' #6

"A couple of years ago, I asked  Ulf Löfdal for one of his meticulously handcrafted bamboo 6 weight rods to give as a legacy gift to my son.  When it arrived, It felt immediately “right” in my hand and I was delighted with the personal engraving message at the base. I appreciate the paced rhythm and play of the rod. We couldn't be happier!

I grew up fishing with my dad in the Colorado high country.  My son and I took this tradition to Patagonia where we have fished every year for the last 25 years or so.

So when my son rigged it up on the Simpson River at Los Torreones Lodge and gently cast a slow arc to a favorite foam line; it was a special moment. And yes, believe it or not, on the second cast there was magic!

Thank you, Ulf for the rod, its' exquisite craftsmanship, timely delivery, and ongoing support.

Good evening Ulf.   I am sorry for the delay, what, 10 weeks?

I have not been feeling well and the Summer temps have been very hot for this time of year.   Just so you know,  i love the rod you made for me, (a 7'3" Swift).

First,  it is beautiful, color of shafts,  wrappings, and I love the birch reel seat,  an amazing flecking pattern.  Thank you so much for making it for me.  My best hope would be for me to come over and fish it with you.  But in the mean time its casting loop will present my fly to where ever I want it to go.  Accuracy,  wow!!  The action works into the mid where the power is, but for the tighter sections of my woodland streams the tip allows me to drop my fly into tiny pools almost at my feet.  ALSO!  Many times, almost all of the time I

need to shoot line to reach a run on the other side of the stream. The Swift makes ThAT easy.

Ulf,  If I were a Base Ball pitcher, an announcer might say that I tend to throw "junk" meaning that anywhere from curves to fastballs to sliders might be coming from my baseball mitt.  In fly fishing that means I will

put together a cast whether it's a straight fore hand, sidearm, quick flick, or back hand, what ever it takes for me to get my fly into the run where the fish is feeding.  The Swift manages all of those casts accurately.

Beautiful, functional, and accurate,  and I have become comfortable with the joint, using a white candle to freshen the surfaces that join.

Thank you also for the ferule plugs.  All of these rod parts are beautiful, color, varnish, patterns.  WOW!  Thank you for making this rod for me!

I will send pictures as soon as I have a chance to spend a few  hours on my streams.  We just had some Thunder storms pass through, so my rivers have some new cooler water in them which should move the fish into feeding.   Our Brook Trout/Char will be moving up into spawning mode very soon.  They are your Artic charr cousins. Just prettier

Hope all is well for you in Sweden. I wanna visit sometime for sure.

Be well Ulf,  I feel very fortunate to have discovered you and your rods.

Hello Ulf,

Indeed, I had a wonderful time in the Eastern Sierra of California earlier this year with a buddy of mine. The alpine lakes are plentiful up there, and the trout even more so!

The rod is a true work of art and I am grateful to have it. I only have a picture of a small rainbow and some pictures of the trip I will attach. Thank you for the work you do.
